Are you aware of the simple yet profound practice of box breathing and its relevance in today’s anxiety-ridden society in Australia?

Anxiety disorders are alarmingly prevalent in Australia. Approximately one in three Australians is likely to experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime, with over 14% of the population affected each year. Notably, women are more susceptible to anxiety, and young adults aged 18-24 show a particularly high prevalence, with nearly 30% affected. This scenario highlights an urgent need for effective mental health strategies.

Enter box breathing, a transformative deep-breathing technique also known as diaphragmatic, abdominal, or belly breathing. This method is a simple four-step process, using the visual aid of a box to guide the breathing rhythm. It’s a go-to technique for individuals in high-stress situations, such as Navy Seals, to promote calmness and reduce tension.

Research in 2023 has underscored the benefits of box breathing. Daily, 5-minute sessions of this breathwork have been shown to significantly reduce anxiety and enhance mood, outperforming even mindfulness meditation in these aspects. Additionally, box breathing has been associated with reduced negative emotions, improved attention and cognitive performance, and even lowering blood pressure. These findings advocate for its inclusion in regular mental health practices.

Understanding the Technique: Box Breathing

Box breathing involves four distinct phases, each lasting for an equal duration. The technique is named for the visualization of a box, with each phase corresponding to tracing a side of this box. Here’s how you can practice it:

  1. Inhale Slowly: Begin by inhaling slowly and deeply through your nose, counting to four in your mind. As you do this, visualize tracing the top side of a box.

  1. Hold Your Breath: After the inhalation, hold your breath, again counting to four. This phase corresponds to tracing down one side of the box.

  1. Exhale Slowly: Slowly exhale through your mouth for the same four-second count, visualizing tracing the bottom side of the box.

  1. Hold Again: Finally, hold your breath once more for four seconds, completing the cycle by visualizing and tracing up the remaining side of the box.

If a four-second count feels too long or too short, adjust the duration to suit your comfort. It’s recommended to repeat this cycle three to four times during a session.

Box Breathing The Team Approach

This technique is not just about regulating breathing; it’s a holistic practice that integrates the mind and body, creating a sense of calm and control even in stressful situations. As such, it can be a valuable tool for managing anxiety, a condition that has significant implications in various aspects of life, including personal well-being and workplace productivity.

In the context of Australia’s mental health landscape, where anxiety is a pervasive issue, box breathing offers a practical and accessible solution. It can be an integral part of broader strategies to address mental health concerns alongside other interventions like professional counselling, lifestyle changes, and community support systems.
