Getting to Know Roee Kohn: Twelve Questions

As a key member of The Team Approach, Roee Kohn brings over 19 years of experience in mental health social work to our team. We sat down with Roee to delve deeper into his journey, his philosophy, and his approach to mental health and wellbeing.

Roee, can you describe a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your approach to mental health social work?

One day, I was sitting with a client in our office, and for whatever reason, the session wasn’t going anywhere. I knew I had to change it up a little, so I invited him to go for a walk in the park across the road.

The next thing I know, he is opening up to me and feeling more at ease. It was that day that I understood the power of a walk n’ talk and nature-based therapy. Since that day, I only meet my clients outside for a walking session in nature.

What inspired you to pursue a career in mental health social work, and what continues to drive your passion in this field?

My mum was instrumental in guiding me towards the field of psychology and counselling. She recognised that my ‘superpower’ is making people feel at ease and willing to help.

She was right; I’ve always wanted to help people, even from a young age. My work is very rewarding, and I’m very lucky to see my clients transform into the amazing people they’re supposed to be.

You’ve worked in both the UK and Australia. How have these experiences influenced your practice?

I am a big fan of travel in general; it provides a perspective that cannot be taught elsewhere. I value my working holiday years.

Working in the UK was amazing. It really opened my eyes to different cultures, systems, situations, and people. Then, working back in Australia showed me that each place has different strengths.

Your clients describe you as warm, non-judgmental, and a great listener. How do you maintain these qualities in your professional interactions?

To be honest, I am just being myself, and the clients can sense that it is genuine.

Roee Kohn The Team Approach Quote

If you could tell your 21-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Trust yourself! Don’t worry, everything works out at the end – It always does.

Coffee or Hot Chocolate, and why?

Coffee definitely; is this even a question?

What is an aspect of our workplaces you would like to see change and why?

I would love to see more nature-based practices in counselling. You would be amazed at how much more powerful this approach is in comparison to a room.

I also feel we need to continue to normalise mental health to break that stigma (it’s still out there, unfortunately)

What are you reading or watching right now?

Recently, I watched a movie about the Homeless World Cup –The Beautiful Game; it was very inspiring and uplifting – highly recommended.

Do you have a favourite quote or mantra that you live by?

Success is the journey, NOT the destination.

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?

To heal people.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Be yourself, and always trust your intuition; all the answers you seek live inside of you.
