Childcare is not just a growing industry but a vital one. According to recent industry studies, approximately 1.3 million children aged 12 and under-attended government-approved or funded childcare services in the 2022-2023 timeframe.

The sector’s significance cannot be overstated, with an industry revenue of $14.7 billion and nearly 197,000 employees. Yet, it’s an area where challenges like staff turnover, reduced productivity, and compromised wellbeing increasingly offset the full benefits of government funding and heightened enrollment numbers.

Recent regulations now demand that employers—including childcare centres—have a stronger obligation to manage psychosocial safety at work. These stipulations are important, yet The Team Approach aspires to exceed mere compliance. Through our innovative tailor-made Employee Assistance Program, we aim to foster a thriving culture, contributing to the long-term success of childcare facilities.

Case Study One

One of the most compelling narratives comes from a for-profit childcare centre. With a staff 30 and high turnover rates, the centre reached out to us. They initially aimed to improve staff retention but ended up accomplishing much more. We developed a monthly support program with a workshop to educate and identify issues, combining team training and an on-demand counselling service for employees with ongoing support. This led to higher retention rates and increased job satisfaction among the staff. This improvement had a cascade effect on the children’s wellbeing and even extended to higher levels of parent satisfaction.

Case Study Two

Another inspiring example is from a community-based childcare facility. The issue wasn’t staff turnover but recurring incidents and minor injuries among children. The initial analysis identified the underlying problem: elevated stress and anxiety levels among staff members, affecting their attentiveness and responsiveness. Through our programs, the centre substantially declined incidents and injuries. Moreover, the uplift in staff morale led to increased community engagement, translating into higher enrollment rates and better utilisation of government funds.

The transformative impact of focusing on employee wellbeing was evident in both cases. As we’ve seen, challenges in childcare settings aren’t merely isolated problems but symptoms of a deeper malaise, often rooted in the wellbeing of the staff. If our experiences with these centres are any indication, creating psychologically safe and emotionally nourishing environments should be non-negotiable.

We have spent years advocating for emotional and psychological wellbeing in workplaces. Our core belief is straightforward but profound: “When we look after our people, they look after the business.” Whether in corporate boardrooms or childcare centres, our commitment is the same: to make emotional health a cornerstone of how organisations function.

I invite you to consider how investing in your team’s mental and emotional wellbeing can catalyse broad, substantial change. The stories of transformation in childcare centres aren’t outliers; they are replicable models of what’s possible when prioritising people. It’s high time we extend the narratives of transformation to every sector, every community, and every life touched by our collective work.
