What It’s Like to Be a Family Lawyer: A Day in the Life of Bec, Advocate for LGBTIQA+ Families
By Rebecca Dahl
Being a family lawyer involves far more than just providing legal advice or navigating court proceedings. At its core, family law is about understanding people’s lives during some of their most vulnerable moments and offering support through difficult times.
For Bec, a family lawyer who has been practicing since 2005, her role involves not only navigating legal complexities but also advocating for the rights of LGBTIQA+ communities, ensuring equal access to justice for all families, including rainbow families.
What does it take to be a family lawyer who champions LGBTIQA+ families?
For Bec, it’s about far more than navigating the legal system. It’s about providing support, understanding, and advocacy for families during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
From helping clients with donor agreements and parentage issues to championing collaborative law as an alternative to court battles, Bec is redefining what it means to offer compassionate, human-centered legal services.
A commitment to the LGBTIQA+ Community
Family law encompasses a broad range of issues, and Bec specialises in areas that are particularly relevant to LGBTIQA+ families. This includes issues related to assisted reproduction, parentage, donor agreements, IVF, and relationship separation.
For many in the LGBTIQA+ community, understanding their rights in these areas can be especially challenging, and Bec’s expertise helps them to feel seen and supported.
For example, when a same-sex couple is considering starting a family through assisted reproduction, or resolving complicated parentage issues, there are often many legal questions to address, and clarity is essential to protect the rights of all parties involved.
Bec also understands that these aren’t just legal matters, they’re deeply personal. Every family she works with has its own story and her role is to ensure that these families are seen, understood, and supported, no matter what stage of their journey they are on.
Handling the toughest legal matters with compassion
While Bec’s practice in LGBTIQA+ legal issues is close to her heart, family law is inherently diverse, and her work spans many different types of legal matters.
She handles marital and de facto property disputes, including preparing Binding Financial Agreements both during relationships and post-separation.
When relationships break down, the process of dividing assets can be emotionally and financially draining.
This can be exacerbated by navigating child support, spousal maintenance, divorce, and children’s parenting issues.
Bec has a deep understanding of the emotional toll these matters take on her clients and works tirelessly to help them find fair, practical solutions. For her, it’s about more than just legal expertise, it’s about offering empathy and guidance to people facing difficult decisions about their families.
Collaborative Law: An Alternative to Courtroom Battles
In an age where family disputes are often taken to court, Bec is a passionate advocate for the collaborative law process, which allows families to resolve conflicts without litigation.
Her training as a Collaborative Practitioner helps facilitate open communication between parties in a controlled, respectful setting, allowing families to avoid the stress and trauma of lengthy court battles.
Collaborative practitioners believe that families, even when they are going through a separation, should be able to resolve their differences in a way that preserves their dignity and well-being.
The idea of resolving matters without the adversarial nature of a courtroom is something that resonates deeply with many of Bec’s clients, particularly when dealing with sensitive issues related to LGBTIQA+ families.
Advocacy and Education
While Bec is committed to representing her clients in legal proceedings, she also dedicates significant time to educating the public and advocating for the LGBTIQA+ community. Outside of her legal practice, she regularly appears as a guest on JOY 94.9, Australia’s LGBTIQA+ community media organisation, where she discusses legal issues impacting the LGBTIQA+ community. She has also presented at national conferences, sharing her expertise on legal matters impacting individuals and families.
Practicing in family law can be as much about activism and education as it is providing legal services. Bec’s advocacy work has earned her numerous nominations at the GLOBE Community Awards, a testament to the positive impact she has on the lives of those within the LGBTIQA+ community.
A day in the life of a Family Lawyer
Each day as a family lawyer brings its own unique set of challenges. A typical day for Bec might include client consultations, legal research, and court appearances.
Bec may meet with a couple to discuss their options for starting a family through assisted reproduction, draft a Binding Financial Agreement for a couple going through a separation, or represent a client in a child custody dispute.
No two days are exactly alike, but the underlying goal remains consistent – to provide legal guidance that helps families through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. For Bec, family law isn’t just a job, it’s an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of her clients
While the work can be emotionally and intellectually demanding, it is also deeply fulfilling. Every case presents an opportunity to provide someone with the legal support they need during a difficult time.
Whether it’s navigating the intricacies of the law or offering emotional support through a family’s toughest moments, family law is a career that requires both heart and expertise.
